The Ram Trucks Year of the Farmer initiative is meant to celebrate the work ethic and strong values of the American farmer. It?s also intended to be a way for the non-farmers among us to show appreciation for the day-to-day efforts of those folks growing and caring for our food.

That got us thinking: What exactly does a day in the life of the average farmer look like? (Not that any farmer is average.) Well, here?s one answer, delivered in the form of an infographic and reaffirming the age-old truth that a picture is worth a thousand words.

Guts. Glory. Ram. Farmers.

Viper TA track-special unveiled to avenge loss to ZR1

Ready for round two? Friend of Autoblog and Motor Trend personality Jonny Lieberman has helped SRT whip the covers off the new Viper TA (which stands for Time Attack, apparently) by putting professional racecar driver Randy Pobst behind the wheel and pointing him at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca with cameras in tow.

What those cameras captured includes plenty of footage of a Crusher Orange SRT Viper TA running amok at The Corkscrew and generally bludgeoning?

AEV 3.8L Supercharger Kit

AEV 3.8L Supercharger Kit

AEV is proud to announce the release of our Supercharger Kit for the 2007-2011 Jeep Wrangler JK 3.8L. We have partnered with Magnuson to develop a kit that utilizes the latest in Eaton's line of Twin Vortices Series (TVS) superchargers, and offers many performance benefits over other existing blower designs. Its advantage lies with its four-lobe, 160 degree high helix rotors, which provide increased air flow with a wider operating range and a higher pressure capability, while maintaining cooler operating temperatures and a quieter operation.

The Eaton TVS hybrid-roots supercharger is completely self-contained, virtually maintenance free, and delivers power earlier in the rpm range and in a more linear fashion when compared to a centrifugal supercharger. The end result is a supercharger system that compliments the driving habits of most JK owners, whether it is on the trail or in rush hour traffic. Keeping reliability in mind, boost pressure is set at a conservative 5psi. During testing, a 2007 JK with 37" tires and 5.38 gears gained an impressive 40% more horsepower and 37% more torque at the wheels!

The AEV Supercharger Kit contains Magnuson's patented cast aluminum high-velocity intake manifold, an Eaton MP 1320 TVS supercharger as well as all of the fittings, lines, belts and hardware needed. To maximize the efficiency of the supercharger, this system includes an air-water intercooler, coolant circulation pump, and coolant reservoir.

Additionally, the AEV Supercharger Kit comes with all of the necessary tuning and fuel system upgrades your JK will require to handle the boost this supercharger delivers. High-flow fuel injectors and a Diablo inTune handheld programmer are included to ensure proper adjustment of the air/fuel and ignition timing settings. This optimizes and manages the increased torque and horsepower of your supercharged JK in order to maintain its street driving manners and fuel economy. 2011 Jeep Wrangler JK kits also will include a re-calibrated ECM and speed control module. This is truly a complete system with all of the components required for a neat and professional looking installation.

Product Features:

  • 50-state emissions legal
  • Installs in 8-10 hours
  • 100% complete bolt-on system
  • Compatible with the stock hood or the AEV Heat Reduction Hood
  • Internal Bypass Valve virtually eliminates parasitic loss
  • High thermal efficiency
  • High helix four-lobe rotors with 160 degrees of twist
  • Improved air-handling characteristics
  • Acoustically designed for noise and vibration reductions
  • Utilizes all factory "push-lock" connectors

Included Components:

  • Eaton MP1320 TVS supercharger with integrated bypass valve
  • High flow fuel injectors
  • Liquid-to-Air Intercooler
  • Diablo inTune Handheld Programmer
  • All necessary fittings, lines, belts, and hardware required
  • Re-calibrated ECM (2011 JK only)
  • Speed control module (2011 JK only)

Warranty:

  • 3-year/36,000 mile Warranty on the supercharger hardware

  • Optional Extended Powertrain Warranty available

Please Note: The AEV 3.8L Superchager Kit is compatible with LHD models only.

2013 Dodge Charger Review

Imagine our disappointment when a Charger SXT was delivered for us to test, rather than the SRT8 we were expecting. Instead of 470 rip-snorting horsepower and a massive dose of torque from a simply huge 6.4-liter Hemi V8 engine, we were left to settle with the base 3.6-liter Pentastar V6. In fact, we were so bummed, we didn't even drive it for two days.

FAST FACTS

1. New is an 8-speed automatic transmission that helps the V6 Charger get 19-mpg city and 31-mpg highway.

2. V6 power is rated at 292-hp and 260 lb-ft of torque.

Ram Commercial at the 2013 NTEA Work Truck Show | An Interview with Fred DiazFred Diaz ? Photo from Ram Truck files

On March 5 and 6, 2013, well over 10,000 people attended the Work Truck Show at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis. Put on by the Nation Truck Equipment Association (NTEA), this annual convention is the place for industry players like Ram Trucks to share their latest offerings with journalists and, more important, the people for whom commercial trucks are built?business owners.

Numbered among the 10,000+ attendees at this year?s show was our own Fred Diaz, President and CEO, Ram Truck brand and Chrysler de Mexico, Chrysler Group LLC. Mr. Diaz, who was on hand to help promote the new Ram Commercial division, took time out of his busy schedule to answer a few questions for the RamZone blog.

RamZone: Why is it important for Ram Trucks and Ram Commercial to be at the NTEA Work Truck Show?

Fred Diaz: If you?re in the truck business?moreover, if you?re in the commercial truck business?you absolutely have to be at the NTEA Work Truck Show. The who?s who among commercial truck and van buyers are here specifically to see what corporations have to offer and how their businesses can be helped, whether that business is big or small. So it?s the businesses, they?re the reason we?re committed, and always have been committed?ever since we became the Ram Brand?to being at the Work Truck Show.

Ram Commercial at the 2013 NTEA Work Truck Show | An Interview with Fred DiazThe new 2014 Ram ProMaster

RZ: What insights or impressions of the Ram Truck brand are you hoping that the journalists and business owners in attendance will take away from the NTEA Work Truck Show?

FD: The most important thing that we want these journalists and industry people to take away is just how very serious we are about our commercial truck offerings, so much so that we created our own division?the Ram Commercial division. Beyond that, we want people to be aware of all the fine commercial products we have to offer, whether it?s the light- and heavy-duty trucks or the all-new ProMaster van that we revealed just last month at the Chicago Auto Show.

RZ: The NTEA Work Truck Show is a great place to showcase two things, upfits and partner brands. With that in mind, is there one particular upfit that you?re really looking forward to seeing at this show? And is there a partner relationship right now that you find especially exciting?

FD: The fact that we now have compressed natural gas (CNG) technology and that we do the CNG upfitting ourselves?the fact that we?re the only company to offer a CNG upfit in the factory without having to send it to a third party?I think this is significant for the Ram Truck brand and the commercial business buyer.

Ram Commercial at the 2013 NTEA Work Truck Show | An Interview with Fred DiazTo answer your second question, Bosch has been a great partner for us recently, helping us promote the use of commercial vehicles alongside their commercial-grade tools. In fact, they are here with us at the show. But really, all our partners have helped us achieve brand success, and they continue to help us create our own separate, distinctive personality, which, in turn, is letting people know that we?re here to stay and that we?re here to grow in the commercial business.

RZ: The Ram brand has a strong presence in the world of social media?the brand is active and popular on Facebook and Twitter. This interview, in fact, will appear on the RamZone blog. Is there one thing you want to say to those ?social? communities in particular?

FD: Just this: we are devoted to listening to our customers and delivering on what they need. That idea has been the fundamental key to our success as the new Ram brand.

Ram Commercial at the 2013 NTEA Work Truck Show | An Interview with Fred Diaz

RZ: Imagine you?re a business owner. If you had to name your favorite Ram Truck feature?or one feature that could help a business run more smoothly?what would it be?

FD: I would have to say that my number one favorite feature [pause]?man, there are so many to choose from?it?s almost an unfair question, like asking me to name my favorite child. I?ll give it a shot. [Pause] Because it can be used for business applications, recreation and for your vocation, I?d have to say my favorite feature is the RamBox. You can use it to store tools, hunting rifles, fishing rods?you can chill your favorite frosty beverage in there as well. There are just so many things that you can do with that RamBox, but I don?t know if I can stop there. The RamBox, the link coil suspension, the active air suspension?these are three of the features I love the most with the light-duty Ram Truck.

As for the heavy duty, what I love is the fact that we?ve whooped the competition?s rear end when it comes to our gross combined weight rating at 37,600 pounds and the fact that, at an incredible 30,000 pounds, we have by far the best in-class towing capability. It?s unheard of, those two numbers combined.

Chrysler 200 replacement coming in January

2013 Chrysler 200 - front three-quarter view

Autoweek reports the next Chrysler 200 will bow early next year. CEO Sergio Marchionne has said the 2015 model will debut next January, and Chrysler plans to cut the 2014 200 model year short to make way for the model's successor. According to AW, internal documents reveal 2014 model production will start this July and run through early January, 2014. The memos don't specify whether its Dodge Avenger twin will also see a shortened model year (the latter was originally rumored for discontinuation, but a successor is apparently back on the table). Chrysler is investing some $1 billion to construct paint and body facilities at its Sterling Heights, Michigan plant for the next-generation 200.

From what we've heard so far, we can expect the 2015 200 to bring a new design language to the Chrysler brand that will eventually bleed into the automaker's other products. Early reports have also suggested the four door will boast a nine-speed automatic transmission and return up to 38 miles per gallon.

Chrysler executed a very successful facelift in 2011, turning the flailing Sebring into the newly minted 200. Buyers responded enthusiastically, with sales jumping 44 percent in 2012. That step up was enough to make the 200 the brand's best-selling car. The momentum hasn't slackened, either, with sales up 21 percent during the first two months of this year.

Jeep reveals annual Moab Easter Jeep Safari concepts [UPDATE]

Jeep Wrangler Sand Trooper II Concept

Jeep has unveiled its annual spate of concepts before the Easter Jeep Safari. Those start with the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk Concept (below left), complete with the company's EcoDiesel V6 engine. Designers threw in a set of 35-inch Mickey Thompson tires wrapped around 17-inch Rubicon wheels, and a set of custom fender flares help keep all that rubber under wraps.

Meanwhile, the Wrangler Mopar Recon (below right) packs a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 good for 470 horsepower. All that grunt gets to the ground via a five-speed automatic transmission and a set of a Dana 60 axles frond and rear with 4.10 gears. The Recon also makes use of a 4.5-inch prototype long-arm kit and a set of prototype eight-lug bead lock wheels.

The Wrangler Stitch (below left) builds on the momentum of the Wrangler Pork Chop Concept. Engineers once again set out to strike as much weight as possible from the vehicle, and actually managed to trim the curb weight down to 3,000 pounds. That effort has given the machine the same power to weight ratio as the Grand Cherokee SRT. Plenty of carbon fiber, door deletes and a chrome moly roll cage all help trim those pounds, and a set of DanyTrac Pro Rock 44 axles with 4.88 gears and ARB lockers front and rear let this machine scramble over whatever is in its path.

The Wrangler Sand Trooper II (very top) gets its grunt from a 5.7-liter Hemi and puts all 400 pound-feet of torque to the ground via a set of eight-lug portal axles. That hardware allows the Sand Trooper II to run 40-inch tires.

Jeep took a different approach with the Wrangler Flattop (above middle), however. With an upscale appearance, the Flattop boasts a chopped windowless hard top that shortens the machine in height by a full two inches. Designers also cut out the B pillar for a massive side opening. Katzkin leather seating indoors helps offer up a bit more refinement, and the Warn Zeon winch and 37-inch Mickey Thompson tires give the rig some added capability off road.

Finally, the Wrangler Slim (above right) is likely the most accessible of the whole bunch, showing off exactly what can be built out of a Wrangler with a little patience on a budget. The Slim features a 3.6-liter V6, axles with a 3.73 ratio, 17-inch prototype wheels and a 10th-Anniversary Rubicon front bumper. Rock rails and a two-inch lift help get the Slim off the ground.

Jeep Diesel?

So there has been some talk on other websites about Jeep tossing a diesel motor into the future up coming vehicles here in the USA. Although already in Europe the Wrangler is rocking the diesel. Going diesel here in the USA is a good thing considering the gas mileage improvements it can bring. Supposedly upwards to almost 30mpg on the hwy for some Jeep vehicles. The way things are going nowadays Jeep should push out the diesel a lot sooner.

How to talk Jeep

So, you're looking at a new Wrangler.  Maybe you've started doing some research on the forums, or maybe you're asking people who own Wranglers about their vehicles.  Have you noticed that there seems to be a whole separate dialect reserved for Jeep enthusiasts?  We get that a lot.  While the intricacies of this language may take years of Jeep ownership to master, this list might help you clear up some of the information you're receiving.

Let's start with the basics;  What's a Jeep?

While nobody really has a firm answer for this, it's said that the term was originally coined as GP.  GP could either mean General Purpose or Government Passenger vehicle, but either way it was eventually just shortened to 'jeep' and the name was applied to all of the small, nimble 4x4s used during WWII.  Then, as the Willys MB became increasingly popular with soldiers returning from battle, production of a civilian version started.  This was called the CJ; short  for Civilian Jeep.  As the brand progressed, the Jeep name became more and more popular.  Today it not only describes a vehicle ~ it describes a lifestyle.

~ What kind of Jeep you got there?

While the Wrangler's iconic look goes back over 70 years to WWII, it hasn't always been called the Wrangler.

Starting with the CJ in the 50's, the legendary 4x4 has gone through a few incarnations.  The CJ name was used all the way up through 1986 with it's most popular version; the CJ7.  At the end of 1986 Jeep introduced the Wrangler, also known internally as the YJ.  These are the Jeeps you see with square headlights and were built until 1996.  In 1997 the TJ Wrangler was introduced.  The TJ was built until 2006 and really brought the Wrangler back to it's cosmetic roots (round headlights with 7 vertical slots in the grill, still used today), while at the same time introducing a groundbreaking new suspension design.  For the first time, the Wrangler was built with coil springs instead of leaf springs.  This made the Wrangler much more suitable to the demands of every day driving and greatly increased it's popularity.  In 2007, the JK and JKU were introduced.  The JKU, or Wrangler Unlimited, was another fresh take on the Wrangler.  The availability of a 4 door Wrangler has pushed the brand out of the niche 4x4 market and into the mainstream and has helped Jeep remain the best 4x4 SUV available, and the last true solid axle light duty 4x4 on the market.

~ What's a Rubicon?

The Rubicon is a model of the Wrangler named after the infamous Rubicon Trail.  This old wagon trail is in the mountains near Lake Tahoe, and has been used as a benchmark test for 4x4s as long as we've been building them.  Naming this Jeep model after the trail was to signify that this vehicle can traverse the entire Rubicon trail right off the showroom floor.  For the first time, you didn't have to go out and add locking differentials, rocker protection or offroad tires to go play; and the best part being it's all under warranty.  Today's Rubicon includes an upgraded front axle, locking differentials, electronic disconnecting sway bars, rocker panel protection and a lower gear ratio to allow the vehicle to crawl and climb very, very slowly.

~ What's the Jeep wave?

If you're going to join the club, you have to know the secret handshake.  OK, so it isn't really a handshake.  It's much more simple...Wave to other Wranglers!  Old, new, stock, lifted, ugly or pretty...we wave to each other.  It's an acknowledgement of shared awesomeness.  It's knowing that both you and the recipient of your wave are cooler than anyone else on the road, simply because you're both piloting the coolest vehicle on (or off) the road.  It may have started with the knowledge that the other driver was most likely a fellow veteran, but it has evolved into nationwide celebration of not just the vehicle, but the lifestyle that goes along with ownership of these amazing machines.

So this may not have been the most informative explanation possible, but hopefully it sheds a little light into the rambling in which simple questions posed to a Jeep enthusiast result. Just remember; It's a Jeep thing!
